Power saver plan on Windows helps you to give longer battery backup by reducing performance of certain hardware components like processor, graphics card, wireless network card etc and turning off devices which are not used. One sudden day my power saver option went missing on my sony vaio running Windows 7. Since the battery backup is drastically reduced when the power saver option is missing, I had to desperately find a fix and here it is :

The default power plans available in Windows are :

• Power Saver
• Balanced
• High Performance

Windows 7 file attributes and earlier versions of windows such as XP or 98 is very different. The difference is notable if you use NTFS file system which has more security features.

On Windows 7 if you get "Write Permission Denied" on any file ,

• Right Click > Properties
• On the security tab, click on edit as highlighted in the screenshot below :
  

By default on Windows 7, the computer sleeps after 30 minutes. Usually power plans and options are more required on laptops, but desktops also do use this setting. This is bad if you want to run some process which has to run for a long time like downloading from the internet or running torrents or running huge scripts. If you leave your computer unattended the computer sleeps after 30 minutes. This interrupts the process.

In order to change the power settings, and to Prevent my Computer from going to sleep ,

• Goto Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options

Most of us (atleast those who learned computer networking) grew up learning about the 7 layers of OSI ISO model or the simple 4 layer model. The lowest layer is the physical layer. On Windows 7, I was trying to edit the host file using Komodo and was getting Permission Denied, and tried notepad too still got permission denied. I thought initially it was McAfee Anti Virus that was disabling the edit of host file as this file is an important system configuration file.

Installed and Usable memory as shown by windows differs when you have installed a Graphics card which shared memory. If you have a graphics card of 1gb memory with shared option, the 1 GB of memory is not usable by other processes. So the usable memory is lower than that is installed.
